Are porcelain veneers durable and how long do they last?

For over 20 years, Ms. Ton Nu Huyen Trang lived with a large scalp scar caused by an accident—an experience that deeply affected her confidence and emotional well-being. The visible scar became a persistent source of self-consciousness, impacting her daily life and sense of self. Like many women, her wish was simple yet meaningful: to have long, healthy hair and feel confident in her appearance again. Today, thanks to autologous hair transplantation, that long-held dream has finally become a reality.

A Silent Struggle Only Those with Scalp Scars Truly Understand

Ms. Ton Nu Huyen Trang (41 years old, Tan Phu District, Ho Chi Minh City) suffered a traumatic brain injury following an accident 23 years ago. Due to the necessity of undergoing two surgical procedures, she was left with a large and visible scalp scar, which became a long-lasting source of emotional distress and self-consciousness. The scar significantly affected her confidence and daily life, creating a silent burden that she carried for many years. Ms. Huyen Trang shared her story: “I was only 18 at the time—an age when you’re still growing and becoming more aware of yourself. Even when others couldn’t see the scar, I always felt deeply insecure and hesitant whenever I went out. Day after day, I wished my hair could be like everyone else’s. Other girls could style their hair freely, go out, go to the beach feeling relaxed and confident. I longed for that feeling so much.” Many people may not realize why hair cannot naturally grow back in scarred areas. According to Dr. Do Thi Kim Thuy, a cosmetic reconstruction specialist: “Hair can only survive and grow in an environment with adequate blood circulation. Scar tissue on the scalp forms as a result of cellular changes during the healing process after injury. This tissue becomes thicker, firmer, and more fibrous, with reduced elasticity, leading to minimal or even no blood flow. As a result, hair follicles are unable to regenerate or grow in scarred areas.” Only those who have lived through this experience can truly understand the emotional burden and deep sense of insecurity caused by constant curious or judgmental looks from others. A large, visible scar not only affects physical appearance but also takes a serious toll on mental well-being and overall quality of life. Worried and determined to find a solution, Trang traveled extensively in search of reputable aesthetic clinics and tried numerous hair regrowth treatments. Unfortunately, these methods brought little to no improvement, leaving her hopes unfulfilled for many years.

Overwhelming Joy After Discovering an Effective Solution for Scalp Scar Concealment

Before proceeding with the procedure, Ms. Huyen Trang underwent a thorough medical evaluation to determine whether she was a suitable candidate for hair transplantation. This included assessing the condition of her scalp and scar tissue, ensuring there was a sufficient donor supply from the back of her head, evaluating blood circulation beneath the scarred area, and reviewing her overall health status—such as any history of cardiovascular disease, blood pressure issues, blood disorders, or infectious diseases. Although the transplant had not yet taken place, the detailed explanations and professional consultation provided by Dr. Thuy gave her great peace of mind and confidence in the treatment plan. Ms. Trang decided to undergo transplantation of 2,000 hair grafts, divided into two stages. Healthy hair follicles were carefully harvested from the donor area at the back of the scalp, meticulously dissected into individual follicular units under microscopic guidance, and then implanted into the scarred area according to the natural direction of hair growth. Just two weeks after the first stage, she began to notice the scar area gradually darkening as new hair follicles emerged—an encouraging sign of successful graft survival. Believing that her natural hair would continue to grow stronger over time, she proceeded with the second stage of the transplant and followed all post-procedure care instructions closely. “These are my before-and-after photos taken one month after the procedure. My scalp has been changing day by day, and I feel incredibly happy and grateful,” Ms. Trang shared. According to Dr. Thuy, despite the long-standing nature of Ms. Trang’s scar, the recovery outcome has been highly positive, with the follicle survival rate reaching up to 90%. She is expected to be pleasantly surprised by the final results after 6 to 12 months, when the clinical outcome reaches its optimal stage. Ms. Trang could not hide her joy: “After three months, I truly feel as though a huge psychological burden has been lifted. Whether I’m going to work or going out, I feel more confident and uplifted. The scalp scar is no longer an obsession, and now I can style my hair freely the way I want.”
